Capital One’s Cyber Imperative Challenge
As a premier financial organization, Capital One is often the target of financially motivated cybercriminals looking to fund malicious agendas or Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) groups looking to extort sensitive information. These groups often use Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) detailed in MITRE’s ATT&CK framework throughout their attack to achieve their objectives.
Problem Statement
Does your ShellHacks innovation solve for any of the following MITRE ATT&CK Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) linked below? Could your innovation be used to disrupt an attack and avoid Capital One service disruption? If so, how does your innovation demonstrate a solution to these TTPs and to what extent?
The judging will be based on the following presentation criteria:
- Demonstration/explanation of how your submission could potentially disrupt an attack by addressing MITRE ATT&CK TTPs
- Number of TTPs Addressed by the Solution
- Quality of the Presentation, Documentation, and/or Solution
- Innovation of the Use Case
- Technical Viability
For either Capital One challenge, participants do not need to provide a full-fledged, code-based solution. Submissions can be high level presentations (slides, videos, documentation, visualizations etc) which explain your potential solution(s) to the problem statement in a clear and compelling way.
Prizes: $300 gift cards per participant from the winning team
Capital One’s Streaming Subscription Management Challenge

- Innovation of the Use Case
- Business Impact to Capital One
- Quality of Presentation (Wireframes, visuals, or diagrams, etc.)
- Technical Viability

Prizes: Each participant from the winning team will choose 1 option from the following prizes:
1. Xbox Series 512 GB
2. PS5
3. Xbox Series X 1 TB
4. Nintendo Switch
Schonfeld Street ID Challenge
Background
Financial securities often have a number of different unique identifiers assigned to them, and these IDs are generally referred to as “street IDs”. For instance, stock symbol “XYZ” may be associated with a Bloomberg ID of “BBG123456789”, a Sedol code of “NPM31L5”, a Cusip code of “16882R179”, and a number of other street IDs. In fact, “XYZ” would be a street ID in this scenario as well and would be referred to as the security’s symbol. Securities usually have up to 10 different types of street IDs, although quite often a security will not have one or more of these identifiers – e.g., a security may be missing a Bloomberg ID but have all other 9 street IDs, or it may be missing Sedol and Cusip codes but have the remaining 8 street IDs.
Task
Given a dataset of securities and their street IDs, design a performant search engine that, given a query, will index all securities and their street IDs and return the most relevant securities. There are different levels to which you and your team can complete this exercise:
The output of the search engine is a list of the most “relevant” securities, ordered from most relevant to least relevant. A security is relevant if any of the search query is a substring of or exact match to any of its street IDs, case-insensitive. The closer the search query is to an exact match, the more relevant it is.
The search engine is pre-programmed to prioritize certain street ID types over others. In this case, exact matches are still dictate the most relevant securities, but the relevance of partial matches is directly proportional to the priority of the street ID type.
For example, let’s say Sedol codes have a higher priority than Cusip codes. Security 1 has a Sedol code of “ABC1” and a Cusip code of “XY1”, and Security 2 has a Sedol code of “XYZ4” and a Cusip code of “ABC2”. If the query is “XY”, then Security 2 is more relevant than Security 1.
Design a dynamic model for determining the priority of street ID types. Allow the end user to actually select a result from the returned list of securities, and use that selection to determine which street ID types are more commonly searched for. Use this dynamic priority as the relevance measure for partial matches.
Input
The primary dataset will be a CSV file with a header row outlining the different street ID types and all following rows representing the street IDs of securities. No two rows will be exactly alike.
For students who choose to pursue the second level of the task, an additional text file with street ID types ordered by priority will be provided.
The query can contain uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, symbols, and single spaces.
Notes
Different street ID types for a single security can be similar or even exactly the same. For example, a security can have a RIC of “XYZ” and a Root symbol of “XYZ”.
See the hacker guide for the asset files.
